Play Dropimals in your browser!

Promo Image Dropimals

We’ve been hard at work getting our engine technology working within a browser and are pleased to finally be able to show you something.

Our game Dropimals has been out on iOS and Android for a while so seemed the logical choice to bring to the browser environment.

This is the ‘lite’ version of the game, a teaser if you like. We’re hoping to bring the full version to browsers in the future, with leaderboards and achievements etc..

We’ve also added a comments section underneath the game for feedback that we can then use to further develop it – please feel free to use it!

This is all very exciting for us; we’re hoping to use this technology to show preview builds to our clients, bring more fun to our website (think arcade) and to also showcase our next title (which is definitely in development 😉 ).

Ragtag 2.0 – Our New Website Goes Live

Last month we celebrated our third year in business together and look back proudly on our achievements thus far. Each project brings its own challenges and expands our capabilities into new and exciting areas.

This month we celebrate our success by launching our new website. We continue to enjoy creating games, but feel that our serious clients would appreciate a more grown-up site.

We aim to be a little more frequent with our posts, and may even begin revealing information about our super secret, Innovation Award-winning project. Until then, please take a moment to look around our new site and we promise that any feedback will be much appreciated.

didlr – draw, share

A few months ago we were approached by a company who were in a bit of a pickle. They’d got an awesome idea for a new social platform and it was developing nicely, mostly. Whilst they were handling the Windows Mobile, Windows 8, Facebook and Web versions internally, they had to hire an external developer to handle the iOS and Android versions. This is where things started to go wrong.

The company they hired were in way over their heads, yet still decided to take on the job. By using Google searches and external libraries they hacked the iOS & Android apps together, and whilst rough around the edges the iOS version almost worked. That was until changes were requested which the external libraries did not support. Very quickly the iOS app became unstable and lacked many needed features. The Android version was a complete disaster though.

That’s where we came in, armed with an ability to actually develop software, and an understanding of how to make all the little zeros and ones do their job correctly. We took the iOS version for starters and within a few weeks had fulfilled all requirements, and then some!

The service we’re talking about here is the new and exciting social drawing phenomenon, didlr, which is now available on the iOS AppStore (that’s the bit we did) and also Windows, Facebook plus web.

For Android we plan to work with the inventors of this fantastic concept to create a brand new shiny version from scratch, so you’ll just have to wait until Christmas!

Dropimals released for iOS

This month Dropimals released for iOS, which is our first proper game made entirely by Ragtag from concept to release. Colour us happy as little piglets in a fresh puddle of mud. Dropimals is free for download on an iOS AppStore near you, check it out.

We built the game with simplicity in mind, whilst maintaining an underlying depth. The intention was to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. Young and old, Casual and Hardcore; everyone could enjoy Dropimals. We think that part worked, just.

As for price point, we wanted to charge as little as possible, but were very aware that having any kind of cost at all would put a lot of people off. We didn’t like the approach of having a ‘Lite’ / Free version of the App as that seemed messy, and customers who convert to the paid version have to deal with the two separate Apps.

A term has been present in Apps for a while now, called ‘In-App-Purchasing’ which seemed to fit our purposes perfectly. We have one instance of the App, for Free, with a button inside allowing the full game to be unlocked for a small price (0.69p). Why do developers even bother with a ‘Lite’ version? Silly developers, we guffawed; we’re SO clever, right?

WRONG!

Upon launch of Dropimals to the AppStore we began putting out Press Releases and contacting reviewers with requests to look at our App. The Press Release part went okay and quickly whizzed around the internet informing people of the games’ launch. The review part however was a different story.

Reviewers – quite rightly – don’t want to pay for the privilege of reviewing a title. If they paid for every game they reviewed they’d have less money than a software developer; and no one wants that. So to the ‘promo codes’, which can be redeemed and allow us to effectively give the App away, for reviewer purposes and maybe even competitions.

What follows is not a real conversation, just kinda what happened;

Ragtag – “Hi Apple, can we have ‘Promo Codes’ for Dropimals please?”
Apple – “Yeah sure, here yah go!”
Ragtag – “Thanks, but that just downloads the free game.”
Apple – “Yeeesss, do go on….”
Ragtag – “…can we have codes for the In-App-Purchase please?”
Apple – “Uhm, no.”
Ragtag – “REALLY?!”
Apple – “Yep, no codes for In-App-Purchasing, TTFN X.”

So there you have it kids, having two versions of your App (Lite Free & Paid Full) is a very good idea for that reason alone. There’s other benefits too, but we’ve bored you enough already.

Ragtag in the Banbury Guardian

Just when you thought we’d finally shut up about the (makes quotes with fingers) “Innovation Awards”, there’s more! The lovely people at the Banbury Guardian paper (@BanburyNews) wrote an awesome article about our award and were kind enough to put it on page 4. It doesn’t get _much_ closer to front page news than this, and we’re genuinely very pleased, mostly with ourselves.

Banbury Innovation Award Winning

The Award Winners

This week the winner of the Banbury Innovation Awards 2012 was announced, and we’re very proud to be able to say it was us! The runner up, Vanessa Rogers, had a very strong idea too, and until the announcement, we thought she’d won it for sure. The other entries were all very good and certainly deserved their places in the final.

What does this mean for us? We get publicity in the local area via the @BanburyNews (Banbury Guardian) and @BanburySound for which we already recorded a radio interview with the lovely @KirstyLeahy (pictured). There’s a small cash prize which we’ll definitely put to good use, as we’ve needed some chairs for a while now.

The most important part for us though is the business support which includes access to accountants, lawyers, marketers, and all those other proper business things we know absolutely zip all about. Those parts will really help us in getting our winning innovation safely out into the world.

The idea is, well, you know, we just can’t say much yet. We will say that it’s a mobile App to be used in social environments, but that’s all you get for now. When we’re ready, we intend to do an initial push in Banbury at popular social locations. We’ll be sure to let you know when this happens, so you can come along and join in the fun with us!

Finally, a big thank-you goes out to everyone involved with putting together the awards, they’re amazingly well done. We’ll be sure to keep you posted on the progress of our innovation, we know you can’t wait to try it.

Banbury Innovation Awards

This week the finalist presentations for the Banbury Innovation Awards took place at Ellacotts’ offices, and we are very proud to have been one of those final presentations.

Ragtag and something related to innovation, what could that be? We’re not going to start showing anything just yet, but soon you’ll be able to have a look, and try it for yourself.

We are software developers so you win no prizes for correctly guessing it’s something to do with software. What kind of software though, and what platform(s)? Again, we stare back blankly and give you absolutely no information. I’m sure by now you’re getting quite excited by what it could possibly be, and we’ll be sure to let you know when it’s ready.

Best of luck to all the finalists who entered the awards; we hope you enjoyed your presentation as much as we did. See you on the 24th May at the Ryehill Golf Club where the winners will be announced.

#NewiPad Resolution

iPad Retina

Just as we’re putting the finishing touches to a new title initially aimed at iOS, Apple go and announce the new iPad. The Retina display it uses means a lot more resolution and this seemed a good excuse to put our vector based 2D source art to the test. Quite quickly a full set of 2D assets for the new iPad were ready to go. The image below shows a comparison of the different iOS resolutions available.

V for Valentines

Love is in the air, or is it that Jalfrezi we ate last night? Either way, it sure smells good! Like so many lucky legs on Valentine’s night, we thought we’d spread some love of our own.

We channelled the spirit of cupid himself and made you all this lovely picture for the occasion. There’s a heart shape, its pink, what more could you want? Software?!

We’re currently putting the final touches on our first actual game and hope to release a version in the next few weeks. It’s taken us a year to get to this point, and the next game will appear a lot sooner, we pinky promise. Keep your social eyes peeled for we’re sure to be posting launch messages when it’s live.
